Lise Meitner was born in 1878 in Vienna, Austria. She obtained her doctorate in physics in 1906 from the Vienna University. In 1907, she moved to Berlin, the mecca of theoretical physics. There she met Otto Hahn, a radiochemist, who became her closest collaborator and a valued friend.
